Spring 2024 AM Activity Contest

 

RULES FOR THE AMPLITUDE MODULATION AMATEUR RADIO
SOCIETY SPRING 2024 AM ACTIVITY CONTEST

 

A fun and relaxed activity contest sponsored by the Amplitude Modulation Amateur Radio
Society (AMARS) to promote the use of the AM mode and the use of home-brew
equipment as much as possible. Vintage and modern equipment is also acceptable.

 

1. Objective
To accumulate a good score using only amplitude modulation transmission.

 

2. Date & Time
a. Saturday 24 Feb 2024.
b. 1600hrs – 2000hrs GMT.

 

QSOs will not be accepted at or past the end time.

 

3. Frequencies & Power
a. The contest shall take place on the following frequencies:
1. 3600 – 3670 KHz.
2. 7150 – 7199 KHz.
3. 21300 – 21350 kHz
4. 29000 – 29100 KHz.
b. When using AM in these all modes segments, users are asked to consider
adjacent channel activity when selecting operating frequencies.
c. Only one signal may be transmitted at any one time.

 

4. Entrants & Sections
a. Entrants may enter the following sections:
1. Section A: Up to and including 10 watts.
2. Section B: Above 10 watts. (Note: Entrants must remain within the legal
power limits of the country in which they are operating.
b. Entrants may change section during the contest. Please use a separate
scoring template for each section. (See para 7).
c. Stations outside of the UK are welcome to participate.
d. Stations must be single radio but may be single or multi-operator.

e. Multi-operator entries may include operators in Section B whose highest
class of licence is Foundation or Intermediate provided a full licence holder is
present.
f. Special contest callsigns or club callsigns may be used.
g. Operation must be from a single station location where all transmitters,
receivers, and antennas are located within a circle of a radius no greater than
500m.
h. Remote receivers outside the station location are not permitted.
i. Remote operation of a station is not allowed.

 

5. Exchange
a. The exchange must include the following:
1. Readability and Signal strength (R&S) plus serial number starting at 1 and
incrementing by 1.
2. Name and locator square.
3. Brief description of equipment.
b. Please log any exchange that you are sent to the best capability of your
logging facility. If you are not sent an exchange, log a zero.

 

6. Scoring
a. One point per scoring exchange element per QSO. (eg: 1 point each for your
received R, S, Serial No, & worked station’s call sign and locator square – max 5
points per exchange).
b. Times two multiplier per QSO where home-brew station is worked and
described in the log.
c. Bonus of 10 points if AMARS Club callsign GX5AMS is worked. Applied only
once in each section.

 

7. Log Submission & Adjudication
a. Logs should be submitted via a scoring template that will be available to
down load at https://am-ars.org/.
b. Alternatively, the scoring template can be obtained via the G5AMS page at
QRZ.com or from the AMARS secretary by emailing secretary@am-ars.org.
b. The template must be sent as an email attachment to the adjudicator via the
following address secretary@am-ars.org and must be received by 2359hrs GMT on
the day following the end of the contest. If you have difficulties submitting your log,
please contact the adjudicator before the deadline.

c. The AMARS station GX5AMS will be used as a check log.
d. The adjudicator has the discretion to apply penalties for any significant
errors.

 

8. Results & Awards
a. Results will be in 2 categories:
1. QRP. (Section A).
2. QRO. (Section B).
b. Adjudicated results will be published online at https://am-ars.org/.
c. The winners of each category will receive a plaque and will be notified
regarding their award by email.
d. Certificates will be awarded first to third place in both categories.

 

9. Supplementary Rules
a. Any infringement considered to be outside the spirit of the contest may
result in QSOs being disallowed, the entry being reclassified as a check log, or the
entry being disqualified.
b. Self-spotting or asking to be spotted is not permitted.
c. Call signs logged must be the same as those exchanged over the air by the
entrants during the QSO. Correction of logged call signs and exchanges after the
contest, by use of any database, recordings, email or other methods, is not
allowed.
d. All requests for contacts, responses to calls, and copying of call signs and
contest exchanges must be accomplished during the contest period using the
mode and frequencies of the contest.
e. You must send your callsign at least every 3rd QSO and no less often than
once a minute.

 

10. Declaration
By entering the AMARS Spring AM Activity contest you declare that:
a. Your station was operated strictly in accordance with the rules and spirit of
the contest, within the conditions of your licence, and that the power output from
your transmitter was no greater than that permitted in the section of the contest
that you are entering.
b. You agree that decisions of the AMARS adjudicator will be final in cases of
dispute.

c. You give AMARS permission to score, amend, publish and distribute your
entry for the purposes set out in these rules.
